So Tannoy doesn’t sell OEM products and you can not buy driver units directly from them, why worry? In wall speakers are getting a part of Home Automation Systems and every company is trying hard to take their share in the market. The quality of their products is questionable, when they are aimed to be used for Hi-End proposes, but it is their shame anyway, selling poor products to their customers who are willing to buy in wall speakers.

Tannoy is known to be one of the best speaker unit manufacturers in the market when it comes to multi-way speaker systems. Their unique design puts them in front of other manufacturers like KEF, Seas and Beyma in my point of view.

In their in wall range there is this model, iw8. iw8 comes with a readily built cross-over. The speaker unit used in this product is an 8” dual-concentric unit. One shouldn’t expect to find a high-quality Tannoy product as in Studio Monitor series but I believe it is a good driver, which shouldn’t be buried into any wall.

This speaker unit is capable of generating dynamic sound with a good tonality. Using the default cross-over the speaker itself is in good balance. For the low end I have used the Singular enclosure without any modifications. The result was very good.

There are two important points in this combination. First, the speakers do not need to be placed close to the corners. The second point is that, the speaker has a very nice low end response. The bass is at enormous levels and the enclosure can go very low like 27 Hz (f3). The sound level can be raised till you see your china doll collection moves like robots in the showcase! You feel your walls vibrate, floors shake. You can see your wife in sweat and your neighbors in terror! The combination of these two can only be named as DANGEROUS! The price of single Tannoy iw8 is 175 USD and Singular is a simple enclosure to build.
